Repeat hydrographic sections across the Antarctic Circumpolar Current are used to derive an empirical relationship between upper ocean temperature and the baroclinic transport stream function. Cross validation shows this relationship can be used to infer baroclinic transport (above and relative to 2500 dbar) from temperature measurements with an error of a few per cent. The mean transport distribution derived from 31 austral summer expendable bathythermograph (XBT) sections over a 6 year period consists of westward flow immediately south of Tasmania, a broad band of strong eastward flow between 50degrees and 55degreesS, and three cores of eastward flow south of 55degreesS. By defining a second empirical relationship between surface dynamic height and... |

Cottonseed crushers face substantial risk in terms of input and output price variability and they are limited in their planning by the lack of viable futures markets for cottonseed or cottonseed products. This study examines the feasibility of cross-hedging cottonseed products using soybean complex futures. Bayesian tests for market efficiency are performed on the cash and futures prices. The test results reject the presence of nonstationary roots, leading to the conclusion that the markets are not efficient. Different cross-hedging strategies are designed and analyzed for eight different hedging horizons in order to maximize the expected profit and utility of the crusher. A Bayesian approach is employed to estimate the parameters, which is consistent with... |

A bimodal volcanic sequence of 230 m thickness on Skiff Bank, a western salient of the northern Kerguelen Plateau, was drilled during ODP Leg 183. The sequence comprises three main units: a mafic unit of trachybasalt flows sandwiched between two units of trachytic or rhyolitic flows and volcaniclastic rocks. Although interpretation is complicated by moderate to strong alteration of the rocks, their original chemical character can be established using the least mobile major and trace elements (Al, Th, high field strength elements and rare earth elements). High concentrations of alkalis and incompatible trace elements indicate that both mafic and felsic rocks are alkalic. The felsic rocks may have been derived by partial melting of mafic rocks, followed by... |

This brief publication began as a need for a short summary of farm programs and farm bills for two agricultural economics courses focusing on agricultural policy -- ag. economics 429, and ag. economics 614. It became clear that many students taking these courses had less and less background in agriculture and less (even cursory) knowledge of policies than those of the recent past. After this list was developed a number of other professional agricultural economists found copies and began to use it, hence its publication in a more structured form. The list of Farm Program Provisions is not all-inclusive. It certainly does not contain all the laws and provisions that have affected agriculture over the years. However, it is an easy reference to farm bills and... |

As an introduction to the entire volume, this article outlines the relationships among the five elements of the Census of Marine Life (CoML) that create new knowledge: (1) The Ocean Biogeographic Information System (OBIS), a marine component of the Global Biodiversity Information Facility, links marine databases around the world to provide an Internet accessible, dynamic interface for comparing species-level, geo-referenced biodiversity data in relation to ocean habitats. The entire CoML field project data will be managed in and accessible through OBIS. (2) The History of Marine Animal Populations (HMAP) is a unique new synthesis of historical and biological research that will document marine biodiversity, globally, up to 500 years ago, before significant... |

Since its inception the GATT, and subsequently the WTO, has been able to operate in a fashion that is more consistent with a club than an inclusive organization that encouraged the active participation of all its members. The WTO Ministerial Meeting in Doha in November 2001 appears to have been a watershed in how the organization functions, and the club model may no longer be appropriate. While it is not yet clear what will replace the previous model, it is apparent that decision making will be much more diffused and the interests of a much broader spectrum of member countries taken into account. The central question is whether or not the transformed organization can still serve the interests of those who were previously able to dominate the clubthe major... |

This paper reports a comparative study of two cupped oysters, Crassostrea gigas and C angulata, and their hybrids reared in the Marennes-Oleron Sound (France) under usual farming conditions. The relative proficiency of these species was characterized in terms of growth, survival and reproduction, three major concerns for oyster farming. Four populations of each taxon were sampled (C gigas: Japan and France; C angulata: Taiwan and Spain) and used as progenitors to produce six different progenies under common hatchery and nursery conditions (transfer of 5 to 6 g of seed oysters at sea and rearing in bags for 2 years). Mortality profiles differed greatly among the progenies. The C angulata progeny of Taiwanese origin gave the poorest results, with 100%... |
